Young Vocalists

“...It is rare that young vocalists who have chosen to concentrate on a manner of vocal production and an aesthetic of musical performance that we call “early” have the opportunity to combine that study with the dramatic elements of opera, elements that often inform the music they wish to perform. This is particularly true in America. Institutions which are committed to the training of young vocalists have a responsibility to include musically informed performances of early opera, as these works have already entered the standard opera repertoire of many leading opera houses throughout the world.”


Our Responsibility

Les Enfant Terribles is AOT’s answer to this responsibility. The caliber of singing and of performance is indeed very high, and the program is remarkably intensive. The educational experience and the artistic results however are profound. Beyond the myriad of topics observed and discussed over the course of the program – ornamentation, diction, articulation, vocal production – Les Enfants Terribles fellows learn how an organic work of musical-dramatic art is nurtured at AOT. Finally they have the opportunity to use performance practice to make this music communicate to an audience, our greatest responsibility as artists. Many of our past fellows have entered the AOT company, and most go on to promising performing careers…”
